If you’re new to detoxing, you should start off slow and learn the basics. Basically, we’re just trying to help our bodies clean themselves. Ideally our body will cleanse itself with proper nutrition, exercise and rest. However that’s not always possible and can be a BIG challenge these days. So we need to be prepared to put in some extra effort to clean out toxins and stay clean!
Toxins can build up quickly in our body quickly….. thanks to our foods and the environment. These are things like chemicals, harmful microorganisms and even heavy metals! The liver and kidney filter toxins in the blood stream and prepare them for elimination through bowels and urine. The body also detoxes naturally through the lungs by breathing and also through the skin and sweat.
But if the body can’t eliminate toxins by itself, it will simply tuck them away in tight places. To shield itself from the harmful substances, the body actually stores heavy metals in the body fat. Therefore if you do have heavy metals in your body, it might be harder to let go of stubborn body fat. Other harmful substances get tucked into the joints and arteries, contributing to arthritis and heart disease.
How’s Your Plumbing?
It’s not a pretty image, but think of an overflowing toilet. It overflows because something clogged it up and it can’t fix itself. The result is a messy situation that takes some extra effort to clean! But once the toilet is unclogged, it flushes perfectly again. It’s a similar situation when our bodies build up too many toxins, it creates a place where disease can thrive! Both the body and a toilet have limits and can only take so much before breaking down.
Speaking of toilets, how often are you going?? Urine and bowel movements are one of the main ways we eliminate toxins. It’s good to have regular urine and bowel movements (1 or 2 per day), that are painless and normal color and texture. Constipation and darker colored stool and urine are signs of dehydration and perhaps troubles on the horizon.
After the Effort, the Comfort
“Après l’effort, le réconfort “ is a french expression reminding us that rewards only come after putting in time and effort. A detox first releases toxins into the body which may cause a reaction in different ways. And sometimes toxins can be reabsorbed into the body as well, hence the need for regular detoxing. You might need to give the body a little extra time to do its job and suffer through it.
With that said, its important to know what you could expect when detoxing because its not always pleasant! Here are some temporary side effects that you might have:
- Cold & Flu symptoms
- Skin rashes & acne
But the benefits will be worth any troubles you have. Not only will you feel much better, but also you’ll start to look better too. Having more energy, mental clarity, peaceful relaxation and a vibrant appearance are just a few things I’ve noticed in myself and many others.

Advanced Detox Series
They’re not exactly “advanced,” but they do require a little more effort and discipline (and maybe a little bravery too!). If you’ve never heard of them, they could seem extreme. But take it slow before you jump in and prepare yourself as best as possible. It’s always best to consult others who are familiar and find what is best for your needs.
- Oil Pulling
- Colloidal Silver
- Bentonite Clay
- Neti Pot (Nasal Cleansing)
- Colon Cleanse (Hydrotherapy)
Little by little, I’ve built my regular routine for all of these. I like to turn to them especially when I’m stressed, feeling sick or just tired. As you get comfortable, you can start thinking of them as trusted tools for maintaining your body… whenever you need a little something extra!
